Matera 2026

A charming service of the hotel: since the street Via Muro is too narrow for cars (not to mention having stairs) what you do is call the hotel on arrival and they send a guy to come carry your luggage to the front door. You can see this in the opening scenes of No Time to Die. Mrs. Gorodish was impressed with how quickly he could book it up the stairs even carrying 80 pounds of suitcases.

Dinner the first night was in the street just outside our room door. It was much better than it sounds.

Not visible in these images: in June the daytime heat was brutal. It didn't help that the stones around us radiated heat. But twilight and night had a balmy breeze and gorgeous views. We contrived to spend as much time outdoors as possible.

Bonus picture from Fortezza della Verrucola in Tuscany. Nice to know that 12th-century stonemason working under brutal primitve conditions could still have fun with his work.
